Philip's Latest

Philip is now two and a half and talking up a storm.  We love to hear him repeat us and also come up with new expressions and ways of relating.  Here are some of his latest antics.

When Andy put him in the car one day, he told Philip to duck his head.  After getting into the seat without any bumps Philip said, "That was a close one!"

His reaction to the flash on my camera recently
.
When he is excited about something he will yell out, "Whoopee!  Hoo hoo!"

Jumping on the bed is a favorite pastime

I think he is going to be good with directions.  He is always aware of where we are in the car and points out familiar sites, "church, cross, library" as we pass them.  He also knows the direction to drive in to see a nearby shopping center that is under construction.  He loves "astrucken sites."  If we are at a red light getting ready to turn in the opposite direction of the construction site, he will repeatedly tell me, "Go this way Mommy,"  meaning, go in the direction of the construction.

We regularly pass a couple of these blow up guys and he has taken a liking to them.  One day when we were passing one he asked me what it was.  Slightly distracted and at a loss for what exactly to call it, I said, "Uh, it's a guy..."  So now he calls them guys and will tell us, when "the guy" is out. (In case you were wondering, they are called inflatable air dancers.)

If he sees something that he wants, he will say, "I'll have that."  I love how certain he is that he will get whatever it is his heart desires.  He will also qualify, "I'll have a bunch."  One day he ate a plate full of blueberries and asked for a bunch more.  When I brought him back a small handful of berries he threw a fit that he didn't get a bunch. Another day I negotiated with him that if he ate one bite of his sandwich I would give him a chip. When he took a bite and was paid back with only one chip he got mad.  "No, I'll have a bunch of chips!"

After Julia was born, Philip decided he wanted to sit in a regular chair at the table, with no booster seat.  This was fine with us until he started running off to play in the middle of a meal.  So we began teaching him how to say excuse me before leaving the table.  He is so sweet as he says, "Et Scooby!"

He can count to and sometimes past ten, but often gets caught in a cycle, "One, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three."  He impressed me one day when he was looking out the window and I asked what he saw. He replied, "Two birds."

Philip is starting to get into pretend play a lot more.  I love to see his imagination grow.  His trains have advanced past just saying, "Chugga chugga choo choo!" as they run along the track.  Now they have conversations and play with each other.  His train table has scenes painted on it and Philip will take his trains for a swim at the beach where they talk about dolphins and fishies, or will work on their parking skills in the parking lot, or run figure 8's around trees.

He is motivated by games now.  It no longer works for me to sing the clean up song and expect him to help clean up.  Now we have to race to see who can pick up the most cars, or clean up the fastest, or run to the car the fastest.  Whatever works!

He is a Daddy's boy right now.  Anytime Andy picks up Julia he will repeat, "Julia needs Mommy" over and over and over until we relent.

Not that I mind holding this sweet little girl.  Just wish Andy had more opportunities to!

Speaking of Daddy, Philip hates to miss Daddy in the morning.  If I go to get him out of bed on a weekday he will say hopefully, "Daddy sleeping."  I hate to burst his bubble and tell him that Andy already left for work.  One day he told me, "Daddy's hiding." We have been playing a lot of hide-and-seek recently, so I guess that is where that thought came from.  Philip will also say throughout the day, "I hear Daddy," just hoping he is home already.  I have drilled it into him that Daddy comes home after his nap, so now I will hear Philip say throughout the day, "Daddy at work.  Daddy home after nap." Yesterday I was putting Julia down for a nap and Philip was trying to fall to sleep himself.  I heard him calling out, "Hey Mommy, Daddy's home." Wishful thinking - you still have to take a nap first!

5 Months

So I missed Julia's 4 month update back when our computer was on the fritz.  Plus, it took me three weeks to finally take her official pictures.  They sure did turn out cute though, right?

Now my little beauty is five months old.  Over the last two months she has grown up a lot.  She is now scooting around, has rolled both from back-to-stomach, and stomach-to-back, laughs, reaches for anything I put in front of her, and of course sticks it all in her mouth.  She definitely knows Mom and Dad from everyone else, so she won't always let other people hold her.  Her sleeping is getting worse as she gets more aware of things around her.  I usually can't put her to sleep unless we are in her room all quiet (no brothers moving around or whispering) or we are driving around in a car.  If I take her out into a store while she is asleep, she usually wakes up within minutes, and you can forget her sleeping through a playgroup, church, or social event.  She loves for me to make her dance, swing in the air, or fly around a room.  She plays in her jumperoo and she loves to watch her brother.  I keep warning him that soon she will be able to move around and grab his stuff.  He assures me that he will share...we'll see!

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, & Happy New Year!

It has been a long while since I've been able to write an update.  With travel, preparing for and hosting Christmas, dealing with kids that don't sleep at the same time, and having a computer that stopped connecting to the internet, blogging fell pretty low on the list of priorities possibilities.  But now that most of this is behind us (with the exception of those two crazy kiddo's sleep schedules), I think things will be picking up again!

So let's recap our holidays, shall we?

We traveled down to Georgia for Thanksgiving.  On the way, we stopped at our brother and sister-in-law's house for a night.  We were so excited to meet our three newest family members - two nephews and a niece, who were adopted this summer. These kids are gorgeous, generous, and so much fun!  My favorite thing about our whole Thanksgiving trip was hearing the words, "Mom!" "Dad!" being called out to my brother- and sister-in-law.  That was truly an answer to years and years of prayers.

We all caravanned down to Grandma and Grandpa's house where tons of fun ensued.  Andy's brother hosted Thanksgiving and it was the first time that most of the family got to meet Julia.  Andy had to go on an international trip following Thanksgiving, so I stayed with his parents for an extra week.  In addition to Thanksgiving, we had our annual family race, a lunch with the girls, coffee with some friends from college, a trip to the aquarium, an evening celebrating the local Christmas caboose lighting, and a visit from my parents.  Aside from the kids passing illnesses back and forth, our trip was perfect!

My parents joined us for Christmas this year which was a real treat.  In ten years of marriage, we have only been home for Christmas two times. It was great not having to worry about travel, especially after just returning from Thanksgiving a couple weeks earlier.  I enjoyed making cookies and all the preparations.

At the Christmas tree farm. It took us a while to find a tree
because Philip kept running around all over the place!

Visiting a local train garden

Philip had a blast with his "Geema" and "Geepa" here.  Grandma made cookies with him and Grandpa spent a lot of time playing with the train table.  Philip really got attached to him and Andy and I enjoyed getting a little break from being Philip's sole source of entertainment for awhile.  Philip still sometimes asks, "Where Geepa is?" and last week he asked to go to Grandma's house. I wish we lived closer!

Watching a movie the night before Christmas

Christmas morning was fun and chaotic!  At first Philip asked us to help him open his presents, but after awhile had got a hang of it and was tearing through everything and passing out gifts.  We went to Mass at noon after enjoying a nice brunch.  Philip was so keyed up, he kept calling out "Merry Christmas!" in the middle of Mass.  Always shy...except at Mass!

We spent New Year's Eve and New Year's Day with friends.  No pictures, just lots of fun and good conversation.  The Baptism of the Lord was on Sunday, ending the Christmas season.  I started taking down the decorations today.  I'm sure our neighbors are wondering if our wreaths will be up all winter!

Since I haven't posted in so long, I'll leave you with even more pictures.  Here are some of our Christmas card pics and outtakes.  What cuties!

Three Months

Time is flying by and all of a sudden I have a three month old!  Last month Julia found her hands and was quite fascinated looking at them.  Towards the end of the month she started to grasp objects.  She continues to eat and sleep well - only up once a night, if that!

She sticks her tongue out when she smiles.

Don't tell Julia this, but she is getting a bald spot on the back of her head.

I love my little cuddlebug!
